Gaming on satellite internet
The short answer
Downloading games, single-player games, turn-based games and most mobile games work well. Fast-reaction online games, like shooters, racing and fighting games, struggle because of latency.
Why
Viasat itself says some games "just aren't usable" above 100 to 200 ms of latency, and geostationary satellite runs around 600 ms. Speed isn't the issue, distance is.
Tips
- Download big games and updates overnight.
- Check a game's latency needs before you buy.
- Use a wired connection for consoles.
- Choose games marked offline or turn-based.
Key takeaways
- Single-player, turn-based and mobile games are fine.
- Competitive real-time games are not a good fit for satellite.
- Big downloads are about data, so schedule them overnight.
